Quick update on sharking. Fished some of the most lifeless water in years the last couple of days at least where we fished. We ran out to (35 miles) inshore way to the north on Thursday's prefish day and due east 58 miles on yesterday's first day of the SJ Shark Tournament looking for a monster Mako but to no avail along with the other 180 anglers in the SJ Shark Tournament. We did well considering we fished the last two days in water much more suited to tuna (72 degrees) as there is no cooler water that we could find and we covered some ground looking. At least our charter has some nice Mako steaks and we will be leaving again this morning for the last day of the tournament. The captains we talked to also had decent Mako action fishing many different locations but at this time no Makos over 200 lbs that we know of have been weighed in. If you have never caught a Mako, it is one fun experience as we had one yesterday go airborne almost as high my bridge and our charter was flat out amazed watching it fly through the air. They can still be one nasty fish when they get close to the boat and are a little different than the drum we have been catching recently. With all due respect to drum and how much I look forward to the spring season every year, Makos are from a different planet. It got my blood flowing big time and I have cuaght my share over the last 25 years. All sharks caught on Mackeral, squid fillets near surface and nothing on deep lines to date and very close to boat.
