The bigger bluefins should be here any day now a bit earlier than other years and just maybe we may see some decent yellowfin tuna mixed in with them as we did a few years ago.
We fished along the 30 line the other day a good ways SE of Cape May and we were covered up all day with bluefish that spit up sand eels all over everything on board. There are currently water temps approaching 75 degrees to the south about 55-60 miles of Cape May on all the traditional hills and lumps that have held bluefin 125-190 lbs the last few years and I see no reason why with the nice water and massive amount of sand eels present we should not see some of the bigger ones showing up any day now. These bigger ones will be caught on the wwwwwwwwwwway back lines, and better yet, on the big planers running large ballyhoo down deep as the small footballs will be up in the water column as they cannot tolerate the cooler water down below as well as the bluefin with more fat content. The bigger the bluefin the more fat they have and this allows them to swim way up north off Canada in the summer months chasing herring and mackeral. I really expect to see the first one hundred pound plus bluefin much earlier this season than previous years but you will have to run south to find them just like most other years and probably fish the 30 fathom lumps as they often hold the bigger ones but the 20 fathom hills are loaded with sand eels right now also so they should get red hot soon with some very nice size bluefin well over 50 inches and up. It is impossible to troll these lumps with the bluefish so thick but with the warmer waters they should be out of here very soon and move north to their the summer locations. One item that has me very excited is checking my records over the last 15 years or so when we had very similar conditions as this year the lumps and hill along the 30 line produced some great yellowfin and bluefin between 125-160 lbs fishing on the same trips. I can only hope this occurs again this year and with the current fuel crisis it could be a windfall for all fisherman and save going to the canyons looking for yellowfins. We also had some great yellowfin fishng around the Tea Cup back then along with the hills and lumps to the south but my crystal ball has not done a good job for me as it never came close to predicting diesel would be close to $5.00 a gallon so who knows, but I do feel very good about what I am seeing. I know if this nice warm water keeps moving up from the south, we will see some awesome Wahoo fishing this year and even some Cobia around the weather station 28 miles off the Delaware Coast. Mother nature could be a big help to all of us offshore fishermen this season if she cooperates and brings the game fish inshore and helps with the fuel issues.
