7/16/2008 6 hours and 5 minutes of shear pain and on the 55 Hooked Up 2

2008-07-16

Quick report as we fought a monster sized bluefin for 6 hours and 5 minutes with drags set at 18 lbs max on a Shimano Tiagra 30 with 80 lb JB hollow core spectra and a top shot by Basil of 100 mono. Sardine on 50 lb floro was the strongest leader we have been able to use and get bites pretty much all week and that is what this fish ate. We hooked up at 7:45 am and lost the fish at 1:50 pm after backing down on it for almost 7 miles. Great battle but we lost it beside the boat when it took a sudden dive under the boat and into the running gear and it was over in a second. We had a young angler on board with his dad and he was heart broken the fish was lost as he was on the rod . Overall it was very disappointing for all on board today but the memories of today's trip will last a lifetime as there are just not too many tuna swimming out there as big as this one at least in our area. Estimated length between 71-75 inches . Off to bed and back out tommorrow.
