We started out at the Claw and had an extremely successful bite on nice sized bluefin. We then moved out to the Tip of the Spencer trolling for other species and caught one small yellowfin. At about 10:30 am the fan turned on and we found ourselves in honest 5-6 foot seas that had been predicted to be 2-4 with 10-15 knots of wind. There were hardly any other boats out there with us and the prominent conversation among the few boats around us was not about the lousy troll bite, but where did this wind come from that had not been forecast . We managed only about 15 knots from the Tip of the Spencer to the 30 fathom line where things improved somewhat and we spent the remainder of the trip trolling between the 20-30 line but had no bites inshore. There was a better bite on smaller yellowfin and some decent sized dolphin inside the Wilmington from what we found out later. The best seems to be on the 30 line and out but I have not heard too much about the canyons lately at least for tuna. We have caught a few barely legal yellowfin on our last few trips outside the 30 line but nothing close to 60 lbs or better.
